Ingredients to look out for: Here is a list of some ingredients you should be aware of and try to avoid.
  • Formaldehyde
  • Paraben
  • Phthalates
  • Triclosan
  • Sulfate
  • Fragrance
  • Lead
  • Nanoparticles
  • Phthalates

Why should you be concerned about using products that contain these ingredients?

Current studies show that our bodies absorb about 80% of everything that is topically applied to our skin. It used to be thought that if you were not eating these items it did not effect you. Now we know that this is not true and these ingredients that can be found in our personal care products make their way inside of our bodies.

So what are you putting on and into your skin? The average teenager puts at least 17 items on their skin a day. Adults use an average of 12.

Why is this a problem? Some of these ingredients  can disrupt the way your hormones interact and actually mimic hormones, which has been linked to cancer and reproductive issues. Some of these ingredients may also cause: nervous system damage, sever allergic reactions, hormonal acne, obesity, depression, brain damage and reproductive defects.

So if this is so dangerous why can stores sell these items? The USA has no regulations as to what is in skincare and cosmetic items.

Introduction
This blog is created as part of our Girl Scout troop's silver project. Our mission is to inform people of things that currently concern us. One major concern we have as growing young adults deals with toxins in our daily environments and how they are effecting us. We would like to share some things we have learned about toxic ingredients we have found in our personal products as well as house hold items. Read our blog to learn more about specific ingredients, safer choices and how to make some items at home.
